They repeat content that is already on Google’s first page. Wikipedia is repackaged by them. They mimic knowledge without actually having it.
This content is not just disliked by Google. It is currently being actively punished.
Let me introduce you to the idea that I think you need to grasp: Information Gain.
Google’s algorithms now assess whether your content adds value to the existing knowledge base or rearranges the same old knowledge. It’s like this: if I can read the top five articles on a subject and then predict what your article will say, then your article has almost zero Information Gain. And Google is making that content invisible.
This is not a theory. Google has written about how they are scoring content based on whether it provides information gain in the form of facts, perspectives, or data not present in competing pages. They’re essentially asking:

Okay, so first off, I want to clear the biggest myth right now. Thin content does not mean short content. A well-researched article that is only 300 words long, written by an actual expert with actual experience in the field, can perform way better than some AI generated essay that is 3,000 words long but covers the same topics as everyone else.
Thin content means that the content is lacking in substance. What does that mean? It means that the content does not have:

For the better part of a decade, the assumption that has guided us as content marketers is that great content travels. Meaning that if you write something good enough, Google will find it for the person who needs it.
That assumption is now outdated. And if you’re in Dubai, this trend is either your biggest opportunity in 2026 or one that you’re already missing.
Let me tell you the story because most of what people are saying about this does not go very deep.
Google Discover is not like a search result. People do not type something to find it. People do not ask a question to get it.

Google is like a person who decides what you should read even before you know you want to read it.

It is not a small thing that helps when two things are equal it is a big reason why some things appear in the feed and others do not.

Local businesses and smaller publishers could not compete with them so they did not even try to use Google Discover as a way to get people to their websites.
Then Google noticed a problem.
The things they were reading were good. They were not really about what was going on where they lived so people did not care much about what they were reading.
They did not trust Google Discover much. Google needs people to trust and use its products so Google decided to do something.
It would give importance to content that is not just good but also about what is going on in the area where the person is. Google thought that if something is about what’s going on in a persons area then it is more likely to be important to that person. Local things became more important to Google.
Google wants to show people things that’re about what is going on where they live. This makes sense for Google and for the people using Google.
Google wants people to trust it and use its products so it is trying to show people things that’re more relevant to them.
This is why Google did this, It is trying to make Google Discover better for everyone.
I’ll start off with something difficult. From my experience this changes/challenges what will be said after.
For the last 10 years, a large part of the content industry was created based on a false premise. The premise was this:
Your job is complete once the user clicks through to your content. If you get the proper headline, bring in the traffic, and anything that happens after that is no longer your responsibility. Google has now completely obliterated this model of operation and it’s not gently.
I am about to explain the one thing that distinguishes the content that is succeeding within this new system and how this knowledge can be replicated.
In terms of the type of content that will be successful in 2026, all the content that wins has one very clear commonality: The piece of content over delivers on what is offered in the title. Titles are accurate, clear and compelling; however, when the reader reads the article and finishes the content, they have received much more than originally was anticipated. They were provided with a different view on the content and were provided with data/research that was unexpected or surprising to them. They were given a framework that they will be able to implement on Monday morning. When the reader finishes the content, their instinct is to save the content, share it or read something else versus closing the tab immediately.
The post-click experience which is the experience of receiving more content than what was expected or promised is what Google is algorithmically now rewarding. This seems like an obvious statement when spoken; however, it is extremely difficult to create a content operation with that standard, and most companies are nowhere close to that on a consistent basis.
First, I have to make a confession. When I first heard the term “Generative Engine Optimization” I thought it was just another piece of industry jargon, a words exercise designed to make consultants sound relevant in an evolving environment. That proved not to be the case.
After going “deep” on the data and watching how AI-driven search is actually behaving in 2026 I can say with confidence that GEO isn’t a rebrand. GEO is, instead, a complete architectural redesign of search visibility. Most brands are completely unprepared for it (GEO) as well.
